A transformador de corriente es un transformador de medida utilizado para medir la corriente que pasa a través de un circuito eléctrico. Medir grandes corrientes directamente con instrumentos de medición no solo es costoso, sino que a veces es muy peligroso y difícil. Por lo tanto, la corriente a través del circuito debe reducirse a un cierto valor antes de que pueda medirse. Un transformador de corriente en serie con el circuito reduce el campo magnético creado por la corriente que pasa por el circuito primario y lo transfiere a un segundo circuito llamado secundario. Debido a la corriente que circula en el circuito secundario, la cantidad de corriente que fluye en el circuito primario puede medirse mediante un dispositivo de medición conectado en paralelo con el devanado secundario.
Un transformador de corriente consta básicamente de tres partes: un núcleo magnético, un devanado primario enrollado alrededor del núcleo y un devanado secundario enrollado alrededor del devanado primario en la dirección opuesta. La corriente a través del devanado primario crea un flujo magnético a través del núcleo magnético. El flujo magnético en el núcleo induce un voltaje a través del devanado secundario. Un dispositivo de medición en paralelo con el devanado secundario crea un flujo magnético de dirección opuesta en el núcleo magnético porque la corriente a través del circuito secundario está en dirección opuesta al devanado. Este flujo magnético equilibra el flujo magnético generado por la corriente a través del devanado primario. Para esto, los terminales secundarios de los transformadores de corriente deben cortocircuitarse con el dispositivo de medición o la carga. De lo contrario, no se producirá el flujo magnético en la dirección opuesta y, debido al flujo magnético desequilibrado, el núcleo magnético puede calentarse y fallar. Además, esta situación es peligrosa para el usuario ya que aumenta la tensión en el lado secundario.
Los transformadores de corriente se utilizan básicamente para fines de medición. El uso de transformadores de corriente permite el uso de equipos de medida y relés de protección más pequeños. Si bien esto proporciona una solución más económica, también permite un funcionamiento seguro. Porque los dispositivos de medida y los relés de protección conectados en el lado secundario están aislados de la tensión primaria.
